Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan (council) was established on February 1, 1974 concurrent with the establishment of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. Its establishment is to take care of the affairs of Islam in the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur before it is placed under the Selangor state government. After the council was also responsible for managing the affairs of Muslims in Labuan and Putrajaya after both announced as Federal Territories respectively on 16 April 1984 and February 1, 2001. The establishment of the council expressed through a provision in the Federal Constitution and the Administration of Islamic Law (Federal Territories) Act 1993 [Act 505].
